One of the World’s Best places to See Whale Sharks

If you have marveled at the awesome beauty and size of whale sharks - even dreamed of swimming with these gentle giants - then Baja AirVentures new whale shark trip is just for you!

Whale sharks are rare, elusive and magnificent creatures. There are only four places on the planet whale sharks make predictable appearances at certain times of year. The Sea of Cortez near Bahia de Los Angeles, Baja California, Mexico is closest to the US and one of the best places to encounter whale sharks.

Whale Shark Base Camp

Your 4 or 6-day trips will be based in our popular Las Animas Wilderness Retreat, an all-inclusive, multi-sport soft eco-adventure destination in the heart of the Midriff Islands region and the whale shark feeding grounds. We use are own aircraft to get you to the whale shark region from San Diego, California in just a few hours and limit these special trips to just 10 guests. Not only can we spot whale sharks from the air; you’ll be out swimming with these gentle giants on the first day of your Baja eco-adventure. You spend less time traveling and more time with whale sharks because no other Baja tour operator has their own aircraft. On your first day day, we will brief you on the day’s activities, protocol and safety procedure of swimming with the Whale Sharks.

Your days will be filled locating Whale Sharks and snorkeling with them, cruising uninhabited coves and island looking for up to 10 species of whales – including blue and finback whales, sea turtles, dolphins, manta rays as well as discovering the abundant wonders of the Sea of Cortez diverse marine life. Each day's schedule can vary depending on when the whale sharks decide they would like to swim with us. Average summertime water clarity is 35’ – 60’ plus and water temperatures around 78F – 80F. Las Animas enjoys a cooler microclimate with daytime temps up to 95F and evenings a pleasant 76 – 78F.

Marine Biological Profile

Whale Shark (Rhiniodon Typus)

Whale sharks are the largest fish in the world and the largest of the shark family. They are harmless plankton eaters, which feed near the surface. Reported to reach 18 meters (60ft) but averages 12 meters (40ft) in length, the whale shark is easily identified by its distinctive pattern of white spots, huge size and wide mouth. Despite their great size, very little is known about the biology of these gentle giants. Rarely seen in shallow coastal waters, whale sharks have been regular visitors to Bahia de Los Angles, Baja Mexico between July and September. Whale sharks feed on the plankton of the nutrient rich waters of the Midriff Island region surrounding Las Animas Wilderness Retreat.

Baja whale sharks favor our encounters with curiosity and much tolerance. Remember we are visiting wild animals in their own environment. We ask you to approach each encounter with caution and respect. Never presume we have any control over their appearance or actions whatsoever.
